BGCC 24 Hour Relay Challenge Results; 24/11/02; Molonglo Reach.

Burley Griffin Canoe Club fielded two teams for the 10th annual 24 hour
relay challenge, starting at 10 a.m. on 23rd November, and continuing until
10 a.m. on 24th November. One team in single kayaks, and one team in single
canoes. A widely recognised canoeing handicapping system was used to
compare the results. This resulted in the kayak team winning both in the
handicap and the outright distance accumulated by their team of 6 paddlers.
The course used was a 5 km loop on the Molonglo River, with the change of
paddler at Molonglo Reach. The kayak team's total distance 225 km. The
canoe team's toatal distance 210 km. The respective handicap distances were
260 km and 243 km.

Conditions were mostly good for paddling, with some strong winds to
contend with in the early evening. However the wind calmed as the evening
progressed, with the slightly overcast conditions leading to a warm night of
calm paddling, and a full moon helped light the way from early on Sunday
morning. The slight mist rising off the river at 4 in the morning was not
thick enough to cause directional difficulties, and those paddling
pre-sunrise were rewarded with dawn chorus of birdsong. At 10 a.m. on
Sunday, those present toasted the successful completion of the challenge
with a glass of cider, and a slice of mudcake.
