Hey guys,

Our work is currently trialing an application for sporting organisations. It's basically facebook for sports. There's still plenty of bugs to sort out but it's worth checking out: www.cutorange.com

You can also give them feedback on functionality you would like to see and things that need to be fixed.

Talk soon.

Jeff

As Justin said your are welcome to join in and hopefully you've got the answers you were looking for by now. I took the opportunity to go to Merimbula for the long weekend and it was superb. I don't know anyone who regrets going there for a break.

For the info of all, there is (always) some discussion on the merits of and legal requirements for PFDs. If you think you can have one on the deck of your boat and simply put it on when required in the water come on down and demonstrate for us in the still waters of the Pool at Penguin Mews - 8AM on the Saturday morning. Whoever is fastest wins the first piece of cake for dessert at the BBQ that evening. Anyone who can put a pullover style one on in the water can have 2 pieces of cake.

Hi Jeff,

Welcome aboard.

Hopefully you made it down on Sunday and got your answers. If not, then you usually organise club boats through the Boat Captian who is currently Russell Murphy. I'm not sure of the best way to contact Russell but his details on the Contact section of this website are boatcaptain@bgcc.org.au and 0427 973 021 so I would start there. If you have no luck, he is a regular at the Wednesday time trials (5:45pm) down at the club shed.

Good luck and I look forwards to seeing you on the waves in a couple of weeks.

Hi

I'm relatively new to kayaking and related water sports as well as participating in BGCC activities, taking them up now that I have more time available. Am primarily interested in recreational activities.

Have a Starboard SUP and a Hobbie Mirage, pedal/paddle sit on top, both of which have not seen saltwater yet - failed to get to beach in last two summers.

Would like to join in the Merimbula fun activities but will not be able to stay for the Mon 13.

Will be going to Merimbula on Thu 9, if not the previous afternoon, and will be organising own accommodation as another is likely to be travelling with me.

I understand that there may be the possibility BGCC boats being available for the Merimbula excursion if appropriate transport arrangements can be made. Favourite club kayak is the Mirage 580 but am happy to use any 'new learner'. Advised to ensure that a matching skirt is included for practice rolls or the like.

How do I progress from here?

Will be at club on this Sunday (29/1) morning, 8:30 approx, for casual paddle.

As evidenced by last years Hawkesbury pooling or sharing landcrew who then manage a checkpoint for the team rather than race from checkpoint to checkpoint following a paddler is the most efficient way to compete in long Marathon events. I'd like to say I'll be paddling but can't. I'd like to say I'll definitely be here to help as a landcrew but thats uncertain at the moment.

My plan is that I'll be back by then and I probably will. If I am, I'd be happy to be part of the Club landcrew - preferably without driving responsibilities at least for the first couple of days while I reacclimatise. While I'm away, I'll follow progress on the forum.

Hi everyone - I'm back and getting organised. I was at Merimbula last weekend - the water was 19 degrees and crystal clear. Really nice.

The basic idea behind this weekend is relaxed learning. This is a weekend for everyone - social paddlers to ultra marathoners. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner fresh from completing the last course or have paddled for years. For those who can, take the Monday stay on and make it a long weekend.

I’m trying to pull together Instructors and Coaches to help but think of peer assisted learning. The basic plan is simple as always the execution is weather dependant. Depending on people’s preferences, we are looking to hold a number of learning/sharing activities to let people practice skills ranging through basic paddling, wet exit and rescue (if we get in early, we can use the pool before moving to the beach), wash riding, speed/sprint training and surfing. A late thought that has come to me is practising putting PFDs on in the water.

This isn’t a boot camp rising at the crack of dawn type of event - we will sort of start to get organised each morning to take advantage of the tides hopefully no later than about 9am. We will start on Beach St and depending on wind and tide make plans for the day - lake or ocean.

There will be a BBQ on the Saturday evening and there is no reason why we can’t do it again on the Sunday.

If you want to come, its very simple, you will need to:
· arrange transport – car pooling may be possible;
· bring kayak, PFD etc – if there are enough interested, we may be able to borrow the Club trailer; and
· organise somewhere to stay – I only have a limited number of beds that I’m using to entice Instructors and Coaches with.

Please let me know you will be there preferably via this forum so that all the information is in one place and accessible to all. I have promised beds to Helen, Patricia, Nobby, Scott, Bob and possibly others hopefully not too many or I'll be on the floor. From earlier posts and talking at the Club, I understand Kiwi has booked a house that he'll be sharing with Rache, Robin & Paul. John P are you still thinking of coming with Wendy?

What can go wrong? Lots actually as there are some inherent risks involved in paddling but this is a chance to paddle in a relatively clean and benign environment with others there to provide support and encouragement.

We have access to Club boats and Wetspot demos by prior arrangement so if you want to try something different eg Stand up boards etc. let me know and I'll try and organise it.

Merimbula has a lot going for it as a family venue and for the paddler but it has tides and currents – all the water is moving all the time.

For more details ask on this forum or talk to me at the Club.

Both are Sundays. Fun chance to race on Sydney harbour. Last year Adam, Russell and I did the Bridge to Beach. Was lots of fun, we had a good SE breeze behind us and some swell when crossing the heads.

I've pinned the info flyers for both races to the noticeboard above the sink.

I would like to propose that we start using the lake again as part of our time trial course.
Start to com bridge, back to second bride and finish.10km
This could be seen as the advanced course, used as long as the wind is not over 20km/ph ?
This would leave our very shallow river more open to beginner time trial paddlers.
what do you all think?

Hi all

Anyone interested in a daytrip to Sydney this coming Saturday (14th) for the Fenn Cup race? Race starts at 2pm, making the daytrip option pretty easy.

Two options: 16km between Collaroy and Palm Beach, or a shorter 7km course starting at Mona Vale basin.

Details (maps, entry etc) at www.oceanpaddler.com

Mild conditions forecast: small SE swell, 11kts ESE wind. (http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/dee_why_long_reef_beach)

Could be lots of fun. The 7km 'coastal dash' option could be great for anyone wanting to give a go for the first time.

This is the last Sydney ocean race scheduled until next spring.

cheers

Great to see some plans coming together already!

There were a number of boat trailers there this year form various clubs and other organizations.

Having a club trailer (assuming a willing driver with suitable vehicle) would mean boats could be taken to the start and collected again at the finish on each day. Makes a full distance option a lot easier without dedicated support crew, especially if you can carry all your food and water in the boat, or just get resupplied along the way.

The campsite wasn't too bad this year. By the 3rd day you're used to "Morning is Broken" over the PA at 5:30AM :S
Facilities are plentiful if a little basic, and at Echuca we discovered you could sneak into the basketball hall for showers.

I think it would be a great idea if the club started organising something for the Murray this year. Bob and I are planning on taking part in a double (which is now on order and will hopefully be on the water in 2 months time!). I'm sure we can get some team interest and if we can get a club type land crew similar to the Hawkesbury that would be fantastic. It has bought club members closer together over the last year or so. Something to focus on.
(although the camping bit hmmm, like the Motel idea myself.)
