Moving to Canberra soon, and was wondering how often conditions on the lake get nice and wild - and how wild?.

l will be training for Sydney surf ski races, and need to get some "open ocean" simulation.

Cheers!

Alon

Welcome to Canberra - I hope you are bringing some warm clothes as we head into winter, if you haven't the crew out at Wetspot will look after you. When you get here, there's an informal bunch that does a 6AM Wed morning social paddle year round catch us at the Club. We aren't overly organised those who turn up decide on the water which way to go or what to do. We don't do a roll call but, there seem to be more paddling in January than July. Normally, when I'm out there, I wonder what could be better and its only when its pitch black -7 and the splashes freeze on the deck that I am able to think of anything.

Our lake is a bit seaonal for wind which generally picks up later in the day. As for wild that is relative. The hills generally break up the wind so it is coming from more than one direction and the waves (such as they are - knee high at worst) get reflected back from the sides. When its happening, there is always one place somewhere in the middle that all the reflections come together and that can be interesting.

I can't speak for your needs but I'd plan on getting my fitness/paddling/technique practice on LBG and go to the coast for surf.

Completely agree with Tom. The only thing I would add is that if you started going surfing at the coast you are likely to end up with few paddling partners. Tom organised a great trip a month or so ago and we ended up with 8 skis on the water and several others who were interested but had various other engagements. There are quite a lot of skiis in the club.

Hope you have a great move and look forwards to meeting you.

Kind regards,

Justin.
