If you'd like to see a platypus in the wild your chances are good at this time of the year as they forage for food over a wider range. I've seen them in a number of areas in the Molonglo River but the best spot seems to be between the 2 bridges east of the club house. I've seen them in this area on most of my training days recently, generally late in the afternoon. While they are timid they often surface within 10m of the kayak. The Australian water rats are also likely to be moving around at this time of the day and I've noticed an increase in their activity in a number of sections of our time trial loop.

i've also seen several platypus lately. after paddling on the river for 7 years, I finally saw my first one in June, since then I've seen 5! This morning near the ski boat ramp (around the corner), and last week one just down stream of our beach. Its quite exciting! saw another 2 last week - one at the bridge but the other in the left hand bend towards the Hospice. very exciting.

It's been great lately. We saw two yesterday (and a water rat) and another two this morning. They are pretty relaxed at the moment. One yesterday and today just sort of relaxed on the water until we got quite close (as far as we could manage to the side) and then took off. UNREAL!!!
